I used to buy Calder's from Victoria wine off licence back in the mid 1994. It was such a refreshing smooth beer with such a special malty after taste on the back of the tongue. Vey easy drinkable and so thirst quenching too.
Best ale I have ever drank . Been looking for 25 years. Yet not found a replacement that has even come close, it was unique characteristics
: (
However I do know 100% for sure, that sadly it is now discontinued. It was brewed in Alloa in Scotland, Not sure if Heineken owned the brewery.
Marketed first as Calder's cream ale with tribute mention on the can, of original founder, Archibald Arrol and son's. Them marketed as John Calder cream ale. Sold in a very eye catching gold can with nitrous widget. As a side note, surprisingly, horrible Skol larger was produced in the same brewery. Hard to believe.
Tetley took over the brewery and closed it. They brought out there own version of the beer, it was called Tetley smooth flow and was not the same. It was 1% less alcohol being 3.5 not 4.5 %. Also more dark in colour and more bitter tasting. More Yorkshire style beer than a lager style ale. It was also obviously, inferior, noticeably, a more cheaper product too. They really do need to stick to what they know teabags.
I think it was finished as Calder's in 1998. Brewery has been demolished probably a supermarket on the site now. There are pictures online of the brewery also of the eye catching gold cans. I still mourn the loss of this most outstanding beautiful ale which showcased the skills of the British brewing industry.
I do not know why it was stooped as it did sell quite well. However maybe it needed some better marketing? The will was obviously not there for this. Maybe it was not mainstream enough to brew in the volumes these big factory type breweries want. Or maybe could be rival and share self space with Tetley's own product. Also the brewery at Alloa was obviously surplus to requirements.
I also seem to have an idea, that the famous Alloa water may have had something to do with the outstanding quality and special taste of this of this beer. As 99% ingredient of beer at the end of the day is water.

Not a review, but a question. Is Calder's still being produced and if so, by what brewery? My brother was in Scotland in April and could not find it anywhere.
